Trim Sailing
Small Crew. Big Adventure. One-of-a-Kind Vessel.
Upcoming expeditions
We are currently based on the east coast of Australia. This 2025 season we are staging multiple 5-7 day spearfishing expeditions on the Great Barrier Reef and looking for crew to join in on the fun!
-
This Aussie winter we’ll focus on the Southern half of the Great Barrier Reef between the Bunker and Capricorn groups in the south to The Whitsundays in the north. We’ll be sailing to some epic freediving and spearfishing spots including:
The Swains Reefs
Fitzroy Reef
Lady Musgrave Island
The Whitsundays Outer Reefs
-
These are hands-on spearfishing expeditions aboard a 50-foot sailing yacht, exploring remote reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. Live as part of a tight-knit crew, working together to make the adventure happen.

Alex Gray
Skipper
I've spent a lifetime on the water. Growing up as a liveaboard yachtie on the Queensland coast, the ocean has always been home. Since then, I’ve sailed over 40,000 nautical miles, crossing oceans from Europe and Africa to the most remote corners of the South Pacific.
Adventure is at the heart of everything I do. Whether I’m crossing oceans solo, leading a crew on remote expeditions, or pursuing my passion for freediving, I thrive on the raw experience of life at sea. When I’m not on the water, you’ll find me chasing waves or hitting the road with my wife, always looking for the next adventure together.
-
"I've sailed offshore with Alex in both Australia and Europe and couldn't recommend his skills and knowledge more highly. I wouldn’t hesitate to join him on another adventure!
- Nick Jaffe (freelance photographer, filmmaker, writer, owner at Kohutt)
-
“I have crewed with Alex through the Whitsundays, he’s extremely capable! I’ve owned my own yacht and sailed with many people since - but Alex stands out as one of the most well prepared and experienced - he is a genius at troubleshooting. I would absolutely trust him to skipper a yacht anywhere.“

Project
With a background as a skilled shipwright and boat builder, I don’t just sail—I know boats inside and out. My current vessel, Trim, is the result of a four-year restoration that my wife and I completed together, rebuilt with the precision and care that only comes from true passion.
Miles to date
Since 2013 I’ve logged 35,000 nautical miles on multiple offshore passages aboard my own boats including:
solo Tasman Sea crossing (Sydney to NZ)
crewed Pacific voyage (South Pacific islands)
crewed Atlantic crossing (Europe to USA)
solo Pacific Ocean crossing (US to Australia)

Selected past expeditions
-
Lord Howe Island – 2019
A two-week sailing expedition to Lord Howe Island with my friend Nick Jaffe, in collaboration with ADRENO. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, spearfishing wasn’t allowed—but we feasted on crayfish everyday. Read more on Nick’s website.
-
French Polynesia – 2023
After sailing non stop and alone from Panama for a month, I dropped anchor in one of the most remote Island groups in the world - The Marquesas, French Polynesia. The astoundingly beautiful scenery of Fatu Hiva is considered the most beautiful landfall in the world.
-
Bay of Islands NZ – 2014
A year spent sailing, diving and exploring NZ’s stunning Far North. The marine environment was pristine and every dive you were guaranteed a feed. The highlight of the trip was spearing my PB kingfish with my mate Rob at Whangaroa.
-
Fiji & Tonga – 2015
My mate Declan and I set off on a 3 month expedition from Vavau, Tonga to some of the more remote parts of Fiji. In the Southern Lau Group we were rewarded with unbelievably spectacular anchorages and some of the best spearfishing I have experienced to this day.
Boat
Trim is a purpose built 50 foot offshore cruising yacht, designed and built in California, 1980. A total restoration of the vessel was completed in 2024.
Trim is spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped for extended trips at sea. Accommodation includes four single bunks in a shared cabin and two separate double berths, sleeping a maximum of eight people onboard, including the skipper. There are two heads (toilets), a well designed galley and private hot shower onboard.
To date the boat has almost sailed two circumnavigations of the globe.
